... places to stay and of course to taste. General wine growing is starting to become more prevalent than grapes for port as the latter is now not as popular. Many cruise ships make the trip down the river from Porto, but we feel that you really need to explore the region by car and train to full appreciate the scale and the beauty of the Douro. A stop at the railway station at Pinhao is a must, all the exterior walls are covered in azeujos scenes of ...

... and found a local restaurant with customers inside (all the others were empty as today is a national holiday in Portugal). We were told it was a set menu which was good with us, dishes kept arriving and very soon we were too full to move. We had a sausage to start and then pork cooked in red wine (gorgeous) followed by lamb in a spicy tomato sauce and then bacon in butter beans! Way too much for two people but all very lovely! We ...

We woke up today to lovely sunshine, I sat outside before breakfast reading my book overlooking the river and vines. We went into breakfast and unfortunately the heavens opened. We had planned to do the long walk around the estate today so we sat inside to read our books and hope the weather passes. It didn't -we ...
