There we were, driving along the 380 between Roswell and Socorro - a three hour journey across endless desert plains and climbing higher and higher towards lonely mountains and isolated gullys and canyons. The view changes every so often between lightly wooded meadows hiding elk, deer and jack rabbit to the infinite vistas across an ancient lakebed some few million years old. Made our way to higher elevation (8400ft, 2560m above sea level) near a winter ski resort in the hope of some cool air and a better night's sleep.
