... they are used to people and just walk right near you. A treat was seeing 2 of the young ones swimming and playing in the pool, just like little kids. They swim under water and squabble just like human kids. They spend a lot of time grooming each other. We could have stayed all day as they were so entertaining. How do monkeys turn adults into smiling idiots? Took trillions of photos of course. Next stop was the lovely traditional town ...

We had no idea of what was happening, but it was a lovely drive first past apple and grape orchards and then on very narrow steep roads to the ski fields including Nozowan. We saw hot springs belching steam (volcano country), natural springs with beautiful drinking water, and even a light sprinkling of snow. The ride back was just as gorgeous as yesterday's when I first rode to the Inn but the sun was lighting up the other side of the valley and the mountains above. It was a good it was a great day. Just when you think it can't get any better, life throws you a loop and you sing all the way back to the Inn.

I was on the road by 7:30 AM before there were too many cars on the road and it was a bit of rush to be riding down these huge, empty streets in central Tokyo. I activated day 2 of my 5 days usage within 14 days Japan Rail East pass and caught a shinkansen to IIyama in Nagano Prefecture. It's one stop after Nagano ...

Woke early and caught a taxi to Ueno station. JR Shinkansen to Nagano, then electric train on the Nagano dentetsuline to Yudanaka. Walked up to our accomodation - Shimaya. Mr Yumoto is very helpful. He drove us to the snow monkeys, then we walked 1.6 km through the forest to see the monkeys. They were everywhere, little babies, sitting in the hot spring, picking nits from each other and ...
