The trains in India are good but in the beginning the system can be a little bit confusing, plus they are super overbooked, so you should actually book a month ahead or more to secure a spot. The last option was to go to the train station personally and try to get "tourist tickets". On our second day in Periyar we went on an 8 hour hike through the forest. We were joined on this expedition by 3 young people from Quebec and another young man from England. We had 4 forest guides, one carrying a rifle, but not a very large one. We saw lots of deer, wild boar, bison a Malabar giant squirrel and a very large snake, but no elephants or tigers. ... high commodity prices so the roads and shops are closed. This means we are stuck in our guesthouse in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do for three days. Hopefully we can make the best of it.

This has not been the best start to the new tour. It's much hotter down here so I haven't stopped sweating since I got here. We are a bit stranded at the moment but I'm sure we can find something to do.
