3 Cheers for Pilsen

... tiny little motor bike with huge megaphone cones front and back, and a tape recording of some event happening in town. It looked so funny and filled the air with noise. No one else took any notice.

As soon as humanly possible we hightailed it to the nearest pub…….luckily just next door! The waitress offered us 1 litre bottles of beer and we ordered 2. That's quite a lot of beer in one bottle, but boy did it go ...

Ferrys, golf carts, another country...

... has gotten us places and our helicopter will be landing at any moment (Colin Farrell).

Uruguay is beautiful and Michelle can´t stop talking about the scooters. We go to rent a scooter and come to find out you need a motorcycle lisense. Bummer! I consider the thought of working on that once I get back to the states. We decide to rent a golf cart instead. Good times. We cruise ...

Popping to Urugay for Lunch

Seeing as it`s an hour away by ferry I thought I would pop into Urugauy for lunch. It`s a lovely little town onyl an hour ferry ride from BA and it`s good to get out of the hustle and bustle of BA. Had a great steak by the waterfront and a nice bit of wine in the warm sunshine (although there is a nip in the air seeing as it`s winter)

... Cobbled little streets, white washed cottages, beautiful flowing flowers, and quaint restaurants and cafes surrounded us, and as we sat down to a hearty lunch of beef (and of course ham and cheese), a horse and cart rattled past us as if on cue.

As we strolled through the almost deserted town square, framed by the old cathedral, it was hard to imagine the town full of summer tourists, and it was nice to enjoy the peace and ...

Uruguay for a day

... board". I was pretty hungry by then and the ferry would take another three hours to reach Buenos Aires, so I went to the snack counter to exchange the voucher. I was handed a ham and cheese sandwich. The subsequent conversation with the cashier went something like this:

Me: Do you speak English?
Him: Yes, a little.
Me: Do you have any vegetarian sandwiches?
Him: No, ham and cheese.
Me: I'm sorry, but I don't eat ham. Do you have any other kind of ...

Another Day, another country

... to the main square in San Telmo (again!). As the sun set we were surrounded by the older folk of BA and as the exhibition dancers finished for the day, fairy lights were put up around the square and the OAP's took to the dance floor. There must have been thirty couples dancing tango, with another twenty or so couples patiently waiting their turn on the side. What a great way to finish our time in BA, a really nice city with a ...

Losing 10 lbs in 10 days: The backpacker's diet

... terminal, writing in my journal, listening to music, and drying my towel. After getting some recommendations from Diane in La Serena, I ended up changing my Uruguay plans - originally, I was going to stay a night in Colonia, two in Montevideo, and three more around Punta del Este. But now, I'll just spend the afternoon in Colonia, the night and most of the following day in Montevideo, before heading off to Punta del Este for two nights. I won ...

Quina alegria!

Crossing the river plate

... actually quite choppy, but 1 hour later and we pulled into the port of Colonia. So another currency to deal with here, out with the Argentinian peso, and in with the Uruguayan peso, you wish they'd be a bit more imaginative with their currency names! We were staying in the "new town" of Colonia on its main street, which was very close to the old town, where are many preserved colonial buildings from when the Spanish and Portuguese ruled over ...
