    ... along one avenue. Was a very wealthy town at one time and a separate principality run by the Garibaldi family before they went to Venice. Maze of lane ways behind main piazza with little shops and bars. Stopped for a beer in one place with a cellar restaurant.     Visiting the Piedmont region was a first for us. Fall was definitely in the air, and very few grapes were still hanging on the ubiquitous vines. The vines were beautiful colors of green, yellow, orange and red, depending on their location and the type of grape produced.

    ... local vino and the musical offerings of a clarinetist with a flair and twinkle in his eye. He tapped out the tune in his Italian loafers, all these guys have really good looking shoes. We hiked way up into the hills at another village, Manarola, and the stairs just kept going up and up, turn the corner, repeat. The view of the sea and the village below made the effort worthwhile.     ... dinner. We were all picked up at the hotel and taken up the mountain to a small restaurant in a little village. The ride up the mountain was a bit unnerving but all worth it. Yesterday one of the tourist saw a sign that said public toilet .50 euros and 1.65 euro for a douche well the Americans were laughing and the Canadians were just looking at us and couldn't figure out what they missed then the joke was on us because douche in French means shower.
