... cold (12 degrees) And Akita isn't any better although luckily the rain stayed away today and I was able to look around without getting wet.

I am certainly not on a backpacker trail here. Even to the extent there are no hostels. I had to get a hotel room ( 2 star ) and pay a little more than hostel dorm prices. The 2 star here though is pretty good so I am not complaining ( too much)

They looked a little concerned that we might bite but after a few drinks became our new best friends, plying us with beer and (to our horror) more food! Jun-san and Paul (an English teacher staying in our hostel) joined us and a few quiet drink turned into a raucous 2am stumble home.
