... detail. The walls are just straight sides with aluminium windows without sills etc. Their height is out of proportion to the ground area and most are brown or grey or off green or yellow. There is just no colour or detail.

Many of the people ( male and female ) wear masks over their nose and mouth. It is quite strange to see so many people wearing them. And white cotton gloves. They seem quite concerned about catching something.

... but with the wind, the smell wasn't too overpowering. The water did feel GREAT. ....getting out was not great. BR-r-r-r-r-r!!!

From the lava field to the hot springs, you are reminded of Japan's volatile geography. Earthquakes, volcanoes, hot springs.....the earth's crust isn't very thick around here or at least it has a lot of holes in it around here!

Another early start and this time we both went to our respective onsen's for a morning shower and soak. Fortunately there was no one else going when we went so it was a relaxing experience! We packed away the small mountain of bedding, checked out and waited in the bright sun for the 7.30am bus, which took us (and half the local school kids) to Takawa-Ko. We boarded the train to Kakunodate, which was around 15 minutes away ...

... had the usual onsen style shower (I.e. communal!) which we decided to leave until the morning. We were keen to explore the area, which is set on a very picturesque large lake about 20km in diameter. Once again it was a great day, with the sun still strong at 5pm when we strolled down to the lake.
