... base just before 8 a.m. with clear skies and a bit of a nip in the air. Driving towards the mountains you could see the first dusting of snow from earlier in the week.

Before we put the boats in, Ron took us up to the old road overlook so we could see where we would be paddling. I did a ODR Kayak trip last year so not only did I get to see where ...

No skiing or snowboarding for me today. I took the ropeway (cable car) about halfway up the mountain and then headed out on snowshoes to see if I could make it to the top of one of the peaks.

Wasn't sure I was going to make it, but as I watched some people ahead of me going up, I thought the top was closer. ...

Back near the trailhead is a natural thermal hot springs Onsan (Japanese community hot bath). I didn't indulge this go, but definitely can see it in my future :o) We stopped at the Onsan/Hotel/restaurant for potty break.

It was also fun watching the workers shovel snow off the roof.

Decided to get away on the first day of the 4-day Christmas weekend and it was a PERFECT day for a snowshoe trip in the Hakkoda mountains.

I normally hike solo, but wanted to find some new areas so I hooked up with a local guide who leads small groups on familarization trips. was nice, but if I'd had the trailhead on a map, this ...
