As you can see, the lake is beautiful! And while it was a bit windy at the overlook, the water was very calm. Lake Towada is a volcanic crater lake created thousands of years ago and still fed by some thermal springs, but mostly filled by all the snow that falls in this area ...

Our first port. Dolphins escorted us into the port past snow capped mountains. We took a trip to Nebuta village to see the lanterns decorated for their annual parade. Then off to the Hirosaki Castle, over 200 years old and surrounded by Castle Park and 2600 cherry blossom trees most of which were in bloom. What a sight ! In the afternoon we saw the Buddhist temples and the Seibi-en Japanese garden, which gave us more ideas for our own ...

Woke-up to 6" of fresh snow and a beautiful sunny sky! So, after a little snow shoveling I headed out for the Towada Winter Festival.

......lesson #284 for living in Misawa......snow comes in "bands", so if it's been snowing and the sky is now sunny.....it will probably be snowing again :o)

I tracked down J the next morning, after having soaked some more in several of the baths. He told me that he'd managed to get a bed in one of the dedicated sleeping rooms, where the lights were turned completely off. Still, I hadn't slept too badly, and my lingering fatigue was nothing a little caffeine couldn't fix. Soon, we were on the road for real, this time heading west and north.
