... out to find the ‘Express’ bus to the park. To be clear, we had already traveled:

  • 15 minute shuttle ride from the hotel to Shinjuku station.
  • 20 minute train ride from Shinjuku station to Tokyo station.
  • 90 minute shinkansen ride from Tokyo station to Nagano station.
Now we needed to take:
  • 45 minute bus ride to Kabayashi Onsen stop.
  • 30 minute hike (up the mountain, through the woods and snow and mud) to ...

Our room overlooks the train line and Nagano train station, so we get to see the trains come and go, even the Shinkansen.
We take a walk around the area and find a supermarket to get some breakfast supplies.

... the Hikari to Kyoto. It was super fast and we were there in no time. Our hostel in really nice, great location, tiny room but comfy bed and very clean. It is called Khaosan Kyoto and has 6 floors. We have a double room, very compact but fine. There is a dining, kitchen and sitting area on the floor under ours which is handy. ... clear the snow from my shoe and I got a bit bogged and off balance so landed in the snow. Where it is very soft, it was harder but most of the parts we walked were quite ok. Partway through we stopped for a hot drink and a biscuit. Our guide made a seat in the snow and gave us plastic sheets to sit on which kept a tiny bit of the chill out of the bottom.
