June 28-29 and Final Thoughts

... br>After 11 days with the car, everything worked out fine, no dents,
although a few close calls, and I now realize that there is another
mode of transportation in Europe besides the train. Both modes have
their pluses and minuses, but even though there were times I missed
getting on the train, I would use a car again. If traveling from big
city to big city, I definitely would still take the train as the
relaxation factor, not having to ...

Day 6

... lunch we played our second and last game and went down 1-0 before coming back to tie 1-1. Again I played defense and I put in a good show but the other team got a second goal condemning us to defeat and elimination from the tournament. Overall I had a good time playing and thought it was a great experience.

The city of Oz flew us over the rainbow!

... a nice one which was full but had a 2 bedroom apartment we could stay in for the same price so we took it. What a treat to have an apartment all to ourselves! It wasn't much but it was home- at least for a while. Of course it was right on a canal and we had a small balcony from which to enjoy the view. Our arrival day was spent finding the apartment, getting settled, getting some groceries and having a dinner of pizza that was folded into a ...

Arrival and Haarlem, May 9-10, 2008

May 9, 2008 We started our adventure by flying out of Bismarck, ND. Our flight schedule included a plane to Minneapolis and then on to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. This was our first long (7 hours from Minneapolis to Amsterdam) ride in an airplane, and we can admit that it wasn't terrible. The plane was an Airbus 330 and it had quite a few amenities that made the trip bearable ...

... and DMX smoked it up. It had a really cool vibe, so we went twice. So the first time we went, they were out of prerolled joints! Grr... so we rolled them ourselves. Got a pack of cigarettes and started mixing. My friend hadn't rolled a joint in a few years and I... well ...

The Biggest Book in the World

... plates, then hand coloured. Some had graphite added as a finishing touch. Unlike previous bird books, the birds are shown in their natural habitat, in swamps and trees, eating, moving-and sometimes killing. It took the publisher 20 years to produce the book. There's little accompanying text, other than the common name, Latin name and location. Audubon published extensive notes (embellished with his own adventure stories) in a separate five-volume book. No one in America ...

Fishing Towns Tour

... minutes, we entered an old fishing town that is now a big tourist attraction. The houses are more like US townhouses, where they are all stuck together and look identical. Most were green or black with white trim. The roads were not big enough for a Hummer. It seemed like the town only had a few thousand residents and Merel said people rarely move in or out of the town. At the center was the port, where old men sat on their docked ...

Amsterdam and Stavanger, Norway

... Norwegian cakes. Bruce and I finally called it a day after traveling all the way from the United States and having a full day here. My day began with doing lots of last-minute work all day Sunday, attending Katherine Rowland birthday picnic at Garfield Park in Indianapolis flying to Memphis, then Amsterdam, meeting Bruce Anderson and having a great day visiting with our Norwegian friends. The trip is moving along very well!

Sinterklass in Haarlem

... Sinter Claas' book of names. While Santa Claus leaves chocolate and sweets in the shoes of children, if the children have been naughty then Black Pete takes the nice presents and replaces it with lumps of coal. The child who is really naughty is threatened with being placed in Black Pete's sack and taken back to Spain - surely a throwback to the Catholic wars with Spain. Despite his colourful image, Zwarte Piet is a very ...

Amsterdam!-What more need I say?

... guidebook and despite having seen it in a number of places in France we felt it was only right to wait until we got to Belgium to actually try it. So obviously, it was almost a major disaster when we couldn't find it in the one Belgium town we had decided to visit. Rosie even entertained the idea of paying €14 for it (we consistently saw it for about €8-10 in France) she was so desperate to try it! Ultimately, after having come to terms with the fact ...
