Puerto Escondido

SO 12 hours later, on Friday morning, we arrived in Puerto Escondido...surfers paradise!! We had booked some cabañas for us, but Amelia had some friends here already and they checked thm out for us...they were horirble apparently and nowhere near the beach! So they booked us into their hotel, called Hotel Rockaway for only 1 pound more...it is AMAZING! We are literally across the tiny paved road from the beach in a large cabaña with a pool and kitchen and even shower...the lonely planet prett...

Dude, its a surf town

Mark 29/5: The bus ride down was up there in terms of safety with the dodgy boat ride in the Galapagos. At times the wheels on the bus were screeching as we were going around the corners and the cracks in the front windscreen were a hell of a lot larger on arrival than when we had departed due to the stress the bus structure was going through as the driver tried to break land speed records. We got in 2 hours earlier than the schedule anticipated which was pretty impressive for a 10.5 hour bus...

... ourselves up in the real surf part of the beach. There were loads of surfers out in the water and the waves were huge. It reminded me of being in France on holidays and taking the boogie boards out. These guys were in another league though. Wave after wave after wave. We sat and watched for a while and even getting out to the waves was a struggle for some of them. Once out there though it seemed to be just a matter of waiting for the right ...

The Sierra Madres & Puerto Escondido

... for the water but they don't! They go in every which direction and not very fast. No wonder so many get nabbed by birds, dogs, etc. They have to crawl for a distance over the beach - at least 20 feet or so - in order to imprint the location - however, that happens - magnetically, I guess ..... and then they're off tumbling in the breakers - getting washed every which way until they finally get swept into deeper water. Evidently, they head right for the bottom and whatever waits for ...

Puerto Escondido - The Antithesis of a Resort Town

... this is worth repeating)
- availability of houses to rent in the suburbs on the plateau
- less expensive than the major resort towns
- the laid-back ambiance (this is worth repeating also)
- it is not a destination for the “7 Day-Ahttp://www.mexico-condo.com/Beache s.htm ll-Inclusive” crowd
- it is not a port-of-call for the cruise ships
- did I mention the great beaches

Yes, the beaches – they are varied ...

Hiding in Puerto

Hola from Puerto Escondido. Been a quiet couple of days here. At first I was concerned with my lack of activity ("Am I sick? Unhappy? Going back into isolation-mode? Should I leave?"), but I´ve sort of realized that doing nothing is what people, in fact, pay a lot of money to come to Puerto and do ...and so, I´ve relaxed a bit... or am trying to. Also, I realized that I´m nursing a bit of a broken heart. It´s ...

A Swordy Affair in Puerto Escondido

... feckin 40 kilo swordfish. Twas bloody hard work and I was sure that pesky Free Willy himself was at the oth** end of that line s******ing away to himself. Anyway we got him onto the boat eventually and brought him ashore much to the delight of the locals who proceeded to have photographs taken of themselfs with our now christened fish Swordy. Turns out that fish this big are not caught often so not bad for someone who´s only previous fish-catching exp**ience ...

... to a couple of houses with some of the officers here in Puerto. It was interesting because in the first house we went to we found A. aegyptis larva inside of a water feeder for one of their roosters that they forgot was there. There were also some in the water tank that they use to conserve water. In many parts of Oaxaca, they only get water one day a week. Therefore, people save it in tanks. Well, of course this is the ...

Puerto Escondido

... Sol and Corona vans, delivering to the most obscure little bars. I think today we are going to get a taxi up to this lagoon which is supposed to be a nice spot. Loads of the guys here are heading down into Guatemala and we are really looking forward to that. G - Its Monday now and we´re still in Escondido and my entire body hurts. I went for 2 hours surfing lesson at 9 this morning and I´m shattered, Im pretty sunburnt too, bodyboarding yesterday was so much fun ...

February Sun in Puerto

... present and if anyone without a board, fins and a Mexican appearance goes outside what I would consider to be the lifeguards comfort zone, the whistle is blown and said offender reprimanded. Having been brought up on the beach for most of my life, I knew how to handle myself, but witnessing the number of people that were dragged from the water in the short time we were there, I can understand the lifeguards' worries when anyone of Caucasian appearance ...
