        Finally there was another grand church. They were closing for the day so didnt charge admission which would have been 100 MK ($2). There were no frescoes in here either.

        ... like I was.

        Struga is overlooked in favour of the many churches in Ohrid. It has the more remote and less touristy cave monasteries as well as Islamic heritage in the town centre. It was worth the side excursion despite all the rushing.

        ... lake, Struga, and even across to Albania. There was a perfect pull off at the top and we climbed down to some stones and sat and watched an amazing sunset that disappeared behind the distant mountains. We set down the other side of the mountain hoping we would have enough light to catch another lake on the other side, we had just enough to make out the scenery but not very much. Then straight to Bitola.

        ... cafés, storehouses and shelters for animals or the homeless. A few briefly saw use in the Balkan conflicts of the 1990's.

      • Apparently the bunkers main use was by young Albanian's in much the same way as the back seats of American cars.

        ... the internet was to usually walk around looking for an internet cafe unless the hostels had computers to use. Now a days, all I gotta do is ask for the wifi password and use either my smart phone or laptop to connect. Its not unusual now to see a bunch of backpackers sitting around in a common room and noone is actually talking to each other. Everyone is either staring at a laptop or phone, myself included. There is still of course plenty of backpacker interaction, its just not ...
