Bhutan is an amazing, beautiful place. It is a Buddhist Kingdom with a ruling hereditary monarchy. The National Symbol is the Thunder Dragon. He has 4 wives (sisters) and 10 children. He recently abdicated after a 32 year rule, and the Coronation of his oldest son as 5th King is due next month in Thimphu, Bhutan'...

Realizing these problems and the fact that the resources on which tourism is based are limited, the government recognizes the need to develop the Bhutanese tourism industry based on the principle of sustainability (i.e. it must be environmentally friendly, socially and culturally acceptable, and economically viable).

... often walked around naked and attracted evil spirits by sleeping naked with an erection and then defeating the evil spirits when they came to inspect why this person was lying the way he was. Anyway, he is known to be a figure of fertility in Bhutan and, as such, many houses have giant penises painted on their walls or have penis carvings hanging from their houses. Our driver, Sonam, had one hanging from his rear-view mirror. So, it was at the place of the Divine Madman that we got a ...
Punakha, Bhutan wizandjeremy... that the only way to keep their people relevant in the modern world is to offer certain contemporary things like free medical care, free education and controlled urbanization that doesn't affect the natural environment (pretty amazing, in light of how contrary that is to American values and how we so rely on the mantra of Capitalism to foster growth). The standard of living here is strikingly high compared to India - most people in the city have a car ...
Thimphu, Bhutan travelingamanda... sweeping the dust off the roads! They have few factories - some cement factories in the south - so the sky is clear and blue and pollution free. Bhutan is called the Land of the Thunder Dragon. I'm not sure why, but I'll find out. The Buddha's in the National Museum were beautifully hand painted, following precise mathematical instructions for facial as well as bodily proportions. The architecture of the buildings must follow a strict design on their ...
Thimphu, Bhutan travelingamanda... tipped him more than he likely earns in a week. C'est la vie. The coffee (thugh instant) was appreciated and worth every cent! Our travel company had sent a driver to pick us up and drive us to New Delhi airport for the 9am flight to Paro via Kathmandu. Strangely, we were to be at check-in at 6am. Even the driver thought this odd, and we soon realized that you shold take nothing for granted in these parts when it comes to directions ...
Paro, Bhutan srossb1971... fast !!! On the way down, we ran into loads of other tourists. It goes to show that getting up early pays as we had the site to ourselves. Dechen Phodrang How many monasteries does this country have? **** knows, but from a distance, this one looked like a Dzong sitting on top of a hill. Once there, we found out that it was actually a school for monks, and judging by their horn playing, they needed more lessons !!! We did a ...
Paro, Bhutan uncle_davros... villages and and across terraced farmland of rice, wheat and barley before we started to make our ascent. We had the trail to ourselves but on this first day there was an ever present reminder that others had been here before: TRASH! The amount of litter, primarily water bottles and other kinds of packaging on the side of the trail was shocking. In a country marketed as one of the last pristine landscapes on the planet it was depressing to see how the ...
Paro, Bhutan hewharris... because of the altitude, but he couldn't keep up with me on the other climbs, or maybe he pretented to! Paro is a charming city. It is quite small and has a main street filled with all kinds of shops, a big prayer wheel and public place. On a good day, you can see mountains at the end of the street and across the river. The Dzong is a little further away, but quite close to the city centre. The size of all the dzongs is quite impressive. All around the city ...
