A lazy morning by pool before golf

The weekend revellers are absent in the morning and we enjoy the beautiful outdoor pool set-up in peace... no pumping music and only a few other punters. Hilli reads, dozes in the sun, crochets and swims. Guy combines reading, scribbling and the occasional dip with visits to an equally quiet spa area. Lovely. The hotel runs a bus-shuttle service to a beach it advertizes as its own... the 'lighthouse beach'. Guy decides to investigate on ...

Balchik, Russian mafia and call girls

We drive to Balchik itself on a road which stays about a mile in from the sea along mostly limestone cliffs. It winds down through the town until it reaches a small harbour area. On one side of the harbour are rather decrepit industrial workings plus old fishing boats and, on the other, is the face of capitalist Bulgaria doing its best to mimic an Aegean village. On our thirty-fourth wedding anniversary (it really is!) we follow the canal going east out of Bucharest until the motorway to Constanta... yup, another motorway, but this one dates from a lot further back and passes through the most featureless country imaginable. There aren't even any trees, it seems, for tens upon tens of miles of scrubby plain. Guy and the Raven get seriously depressed and more than a little ...

      ... for that price.
So, we were pleasant to meet other party-people and having awesome nights with them.

I also went to Varna, 1. to go shopping in the Grand Mall (highly recommendable) and 2. to have a walk in the park. I wasn't that impressed; it was nice.

      Lazy days

After a whistle stop tour of what felt like most of Turkey, we decided to have a few days off from sightseeing and go and sit on the beach. So we hopped on a bus and headed to Bulgaria where we planned to do not very much just north of Varna on the Black Sea coast. It was on the way to Romania (our next stop), so nice and handy.

I feel slightly bad for Bulgaria in that we didn't see much of it, didn't really learn an awful ...
