We arrived in the port of Naples. I don't really know what we were expecting but Naples itself seems pretty dirty and gritty with graffiti everywhere. We took the train to Pompeii for the day. Around 2000 years ago people didn't know that Vesuvius was a volcano. In 62 AD a tremor occurred which caused damage to many homes and public buildings. In August 79 AD the most devastating eruption occurred which destroyed the whole city of Pompeii covering it in ash. The ...

We can't believe how many people live in the red zone, they keep moving closer and closer to the top of the volcano. Apparently it would take them about 2 weeks to evacuate everyone. after we all climbed safely back down, we had lunch in Naples and then headed out to ...

Our last walk on the Amalfi Coast, it will start with a bus ride down to Vietri Sul Mare. We will climb through some small hill towns looking for a sweeping view of the valley. Once again, we are following directions that leave a lot to be desired, and we make a couple of wrong turns, but never going very far astray. Also one big miscalculation made on my part about half way; we start descending into ...

... 8230;.thru slummy neighborhoods) we started to wonder if we were on the right train and if so, where do we get off. Turns out we were right but picked 1 stop too early to disembark. No problem, we just caught the next one and were dumped right at the Pompeii ruins site. Very touristy. Very busy. I had read there were 2 ways to see the volcano--tour in 4x4 truck up a winding road to the summit, or local bus that takes you within ...
