A Day (or two) in the Life of Benita

... at the collapsing crest of foaming water, to then resigned, pick my way back to the car to clean off my feet, all to Greg's disappointed tsks in my direction. But at least I had the decency to get as much sand off before I put my feet into the car!
Here's to the Sun, and hopefully 11 more days of it! I can be cold at home, I don't need it here. But please do remind me next time I decide to take a trip that November maybe isn't such a great idea!
Ciao Ciao!! Benita

Back to the Roots

... It's, I believe because I'm not used to being out of the loop. I spent the majority of my childhood playing interpreter. I was always the bridge. The connection between two lanaguages, between to worlds. And now I am stuck, in limbo, bereft. I hardly know what to do with myself!

I arrived in Vibo Valentia on Saturday night around 19:00 hrs. And by the good graces of family, Zio Ciccio and my ...

San Giorgio Morgeto

... much of the town is getting a face-lift. Streets, churches, town walls, piazzas, and even the castle are being renovated and improved. We spent hours simply strolling through the narrow streets (occasionally getting lost as they were quite confusing) taking note of the names on the doors. It was fascinating to see all the names of families that we know from home here at the source of their family roots. We came across, Sorbara, Furfaro ...

The Deep South (of Italy)

... who renovated and extended a house on the site of one of the Roman emperor Tiberius' palaces (he had 12 on the island), unearthing a treasure trove of columns, statues, mosaics, etc. He incorporated these into the house, which he called San Michele. It is in an incredibly beautiful position on a sheer cliff-top near Anacapri, and he even found a beautiful sphinx of red stone, which sits on a terrace overlooking the sea. He wrote a book, virtually a biography, called ...

Tropea - I had no idea!

... times. Of course we were curious to see this place as it was all very matter of fact. So up we went, and found a beautiful site overlooking the country and sea with an open air church and two fenced in squares stating the exact dates when Jesus appeared there. Very unusual and for me very strange and rather funny - I can't imagine ever seeing a sign like that in Australia that's for sure!

The Italian language

... in Italy's lyrical vernacular. The new language grew steadily in importance, mainly perpetuated by life in the burghs and it was in this type of cultural background that the ideas and poetry of Dante blossomed, who wrote the first ever work of poetry in the Florentine vernacular, the marvellous Divina Commedia (Divine Comedy ...

The Hunt for the La Praia Hotel

Now all we need is some inspiring music similar to "The Hunt for Red October" and that would start out this entry in good fashion. Our day began leaving Sorrento and hopping on the A3 Autostrada heading south towards Reggio Di Calabria, our final destination where we would catch a ferry towards Sicily. This would be a "free" day of sorts and Danielle's plan was to stop in Tropea to spend the night in a hotel so we didn't ...
