Next to Piazza Erbe is Piazza Dante, with a large statue of the Italian poet Dante Alighieri in the middle, and a villa and tombs of the once powerful Scaligeri family (a bit like Florence's Medici family) ...

... were designed and built in 1570 and retain the same design. One half is formal hedges, grass and statues with a maze on one side, the other half goes up a hill and is more natural looking. Garden is enclosed by cypress trees and there is a central avenue of them that guide you to a grotto and then you climb a path to a tower that has steps to take you to the top where there are great views out over the city. Unfortunately the heavy haze meant we did not get a clear view. Came back ...
