    ... the sea and salt water eat away at the foundations of the buildings. Do they have to tighten them up once in a while? Venice has suffered from moral disintegration at times too. A little history lesson told us that in the 18th century, the population was subjugated by a city-wide addiction to gambling that brought ruin to many families, even among clergy. Some streets are named after playing cards!

    ... and it was heart warming to finally see such a beautiful and renouned city. We dropped off the bags, ate pizza for lunch (of course), then caught a ferry around to St Marco Square.

    It was full of squillions of tourists, crowding around the square and cathedral. We paid to visit to Doges Palace, which was very worthwhile. It was amazing.

    We spent the rest of the afternoon there, had dinner, then caught the ferry back. A lovely end to our first day in Italy.

    Although the lovely basilica and its grand piazza were glorious we just loved getting lost in Venice. Apparently everyone get lost in Venice, the street signs are terrible, the map is useless and the backstreets too numerous to fit on any size map.     ... Bellini cocktail was the first thing on the table, soon to be followed by followed by a liter of house wine.
