It is tempting to be blasť about visiting another walled city. But arriving mid afternoon gave us the opportunity to walk through the ancient streets and down an improbably steep lane to the river running through the bottom of the typically picturesque valley, with a viaduct and the walls dominating the skyline.

We got Matilda up and running again and, after our slight detour, we found ourselves at the hotel.

After a long trip a nice and nothing to eat since our breakfast in Chartres a lovely dinner was in order. Right next door to the hotel we fund a seafood restaurant and in we went.

Fougeres has a magnificent castle built on the side of the hill sloping down to the river. The builders had used the river to fill the moat and drive four water wheels that remain in use (I guess having been replaced a few times).
