I left Paris last Friday and took the train to Brugge, via Brussels. Brugge is a very old Gothic town in northern Belgium, quite close to the North Sea, so weather can be changeable as I witnessed on arrival. Beautiful blue skies so I took myself into town for some late lunch. Next thing, the market umbrella protecting me from the sun is upended and nearly spears me in half. Today was another alarmingly hot day. Although it rained ...
... the crowds were stressful in a couple of spots, but we've gotten good at steering clear of them whenever possible.) We started by visiting a church that was very impressive on the outside, but plain and under heavy construction inside. A little disappointed after being spoiled by such amazing churches in Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent, we sought out a better religious monument. Happily, Bruges' Onze-Lieve-Vrouwerk fit the bill. Though dark and imposing, ...
