Kings Day in Amsterdam was amazing! It started unofficially last night and continued on the public holiday today. The inner city was closed to cars and trams so that the people could walk freely. The streets and canals were lined with flea markets and stalls of food/drink and orange clothing/accessories. Parks were filled with children (and their parents) ...

... The Nightwatch over the crowds' heads is one of those moments like one's first sight of the Venus de Milo or Michelangelo's David. Except that the Rembrandt really does GLOW. It's lovely.

It turned out the tights I bought yesterday didn't fit, so I ducked into a department store, V&D, to get a different pair, then returned the other ones from H&M. You would think there is a trend with these store names, but it's just a coincidence. ... true river, the Amstel. We first went into the very large canal behind the Railway station before turning into some of the smaller waterways. We went past many of the major sights including the Rembrandt Museum, the Opera House, Westerkerk, once the largest church in Europe with an extremely high tower and the house of Anne Frank, outside of which was a large queue waiting to be admitted. There are many houseboats lining the canals which have all manner of plants etc ...
