... We climbed out of Brian(s)con and headed to the Col du Lautaret. This was beautiful fast road with lost of curves but no switchbacks. Just a buzz to ride and climb into the blue sky through green alpine pastures. From their it was up to the Col de Galibier. At 2642m as its only slightly lower than Ruapehu (2797m), but the surrounding countryside could not have been more different.

... through the village, it climbs the Col d'Allos for 10km. We wound our way up its hairpin bends with increasingly great views of the valley below and up into the very alpine crest. It was a building site. The commune were putting up a building and had fenced off part of the aire for access ...

After a horrid nights sleep, with 3 of us not well, we left Asti and drove towards the French border and the formidable Alps. We encountered quite a few tunnels that we had to drive through with some being over 5kms long. At least this saved us having to wind our way through the mountains. Once again there were snow capped mountains on either side of us.

We entered into France and came across a little ski town in the French Alps that was covered in snow. Sophie ...

... then decide the night before or that morning what to do. Paul had picked out a ride (up another really big hill) to the Col de Solude at an altitude of 1680m. We didn't really know what to expect from the ride except that Paul had read online from another cyclist that when you get to the top it is worth walking about 5 minutes to a view point, so off we set. This was another really tough ride for me, it was basically a hill which went on for 8.5 miles and it was at least ...
