... hill, pretty nippy today with low cloud cover. We got back to Allemont by decided to stop for an ice cream then do a lap around the lake. Quiet afternoon with showers and a load a smelly washing, then we went out for dinner as we have no gas to cook with. We both had pasta in bolognaise sauce. Mat found a rock climbing wall which he was pretty happy ...

    Rest day at Allemont

A travel blog entry by eyork on Jul 29, 2015

We left our beloved botchy field, filled up with petrol and drove around the corner to Allemont. We hunted again for gas, or some way to make it work, but no luck. Again. Not very happy! Not only with the gas, but also troubles with the fridge and 12V powerpoints. Baguette for lunch, set up the van with electricity and went for a walk. Cold and rainy this afternoon, but still able to wander through the town of Allemont. A nice quiet rest day ...

We headed towards the Col du Golibier but unfortunately the road was closed as its too dangerous to drive/ride. We headed up to the Col du Sarenna instead, which is the other side of the mountain to the Alpe d'huez. It was incredible! The summit was unreal. We were almost in the snow!! We stopped for a banana and a rest, the continued on. We stopped at the summit of the Alpe d'huez for a coffee and shared a pizza. We sat outside in the sunshine - we ...

    Day 6

Another early start. Today we have about a 2 hr. van ride to get close to Alpe Du Huez. Today's ride is very short, about 20 miles, but we will be climbing about 13 miles. Alps Du Huez is one of the most famous climbs in the TDF. It is frequently featured as the Queen stage of the tour. Because of its fame it is hugely popular for cycling fans. Besides it's overall steep pitch it is also know for its 21 "switch backs" as it zigzags up the mountain. It is ...
