Today we arrived in Biggy's hometown. For those relatives/friends who aren’t aware – though with me ceaselessly talking about floaty pens, I’m not sure it’s possible – Biggy is a floaty pen collector/trader/friend who lives in Germany. She has an extensive collection – 10 times that of mine!!! She has her own floaty pen room with beautiful custom ...
Gronau, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany kveeti... and let him find his way home alone. Can you imagine that happening today?

In the interests of history, we explored the small Hengelo museum, which had an unusual cellar full of pickles and a Singer sewing machine. I bought an old photo postcard of the town, then we walked back to the van der Poel ice-cream shop. It claims to have 120 flavours, but we couldn't try them all. We certainly enjoyed the ones we did try.
Hengelo, Overijssel, Netherlands rachelkw... with horses and foals gambolling in the fields outside the windows. Sander and Renata are very friendly. They greeted us at the backdoor next to their metre-deep paddling pool. Despite the tepid temperature, the kids donned their costumes and leapt in, before we even got into the house.

After putting the children to bed, we talked for a bit. I had been on the go for 18 hours but I was having trouble sleeping. I guess the adrenaline was still pumping. Eventually I snuggled ...
Deurningen, Overijssel, Netherlands rachelkw... There is also a new wonder food we discovered called Quark. This is a kind of yogurt made with active bacteria or something. One night Linda looked it up on the Internet and found we can get it at a specialty food store in South Lake. Dietmar, Joysanna's host-brother, works for a Whole Foods-like company called Bioladen, which has nothing to do with Osama Bin Laden, but could have a shot at taking over the world. It's sort of a cross between Sams and Central Market and ...
Coesfeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany jrutledgeHappy 4th of July! Only a few hours left of my conference. It has been a productive experience. I have gotten positive feedback for my paper and some helpful comments that I will have to incorporate when I return. Plus, I have laid the ground work for a guest researcher position at the UNU in Maastricht, Netherlands maybe next summer. They are doing some Nanotechnology work and would appreciate the American perspective. The ...

Winterswijk, Netherlands cb_goes_againAfter spending the last few days in Amsterdam I could use a more relaxed day. Heading to Deventer today to drop some stuff off with a friend. The original plan was to head to Nijmegen to visit some more people but we decided to head back to Amsterdam and finish the night with some beer instead.
Deventer, Netherlands dimitris_... to the lake where the flamingos lived. Unfortunately, where the clearing was to see them, they were far away and I didn't get very good pictures, but it was still a neat idea that they were there. Then we biked back to her house. I love bike riding, but I haven't gone for a few months so after riding for so long, my butt was quite sore. Sandra and her sisters have horses housed at a stable. We went to let them out for a while so they ...
Vreden, Germany pianoandguitarsTravelled by train from Amsterdam to Enschede which is in the east of the country. My purpose was to visit the School of Management at the University of Twente. The university is situated in a very beautiful parkland environment. Stayed at the Hotel Eden de Broeierd which is situated close to the university. The hotel itself is in a nice setting and very quiet.
