... visit to Lascaux cave about 45 minutes north-west of Montfort. This was not a cave of glowworms, stalagmytes or stalactytes. Instead, it housed the artwork of the earliest humans to inhabit western France, Cro-Magnon, dating back some 17000 years ago. Unfortunately, the original cave is off-limits for preservation reasons, but an exact replica, just 200 metres away, has been painstakingly created of the cave structure and the paintings themselves. Day 35-

We left Perigueux today as a group of four. We picked up another Dutchman along the way. They call themselves my bodyguards. Unfortunately for me, the addition of another Dutchman meant that most of the conversation was now in Dutch, of which I understand about two words. We left before 7am, and I was glad for this because it was predicted to be very hot today. The first half of the walk was very challenging as it was nearly entirely an uphill climb. When I would ...

Medieval Streets and Feasts

... had a pleasant ending with music. The other pilgrims said they had discovered a pilgrim’s song, and they pulled out a copy of the lyrics they had found online. It was "Ultreia", the song my previous companions had taught me. So, we sang it together and the German man (the one I met in la Souterraine) played the harmonica. A true medieval ending to a medieval feast.
