... and then headed back for the bus. Dear Michele came a bit early to get us out of the rain. Headed on across Germany, following the Rhine and eventually stopping at St Goar where we picked up the cruise ship which took us a further hour up the Rhine. Gorgeous boat, could well have spent lot more time on board. Sat out on the deck, rain had stopped and the sun trying to shine. Not too cold. Needed jacket ...

... small villages complete with roof-top stork nests, including the occasional stork, delivering a baby (I kid you not, world traveler). The fox, lynx and stag are apparently quite in evidence, as are a unique variety of Black Forest cows (stout, raised to thrive on the steep hillsides) and a small, shaggy variety of horse bred to haul timber from the deep woods. ... and the fruity ones were crisply tasty. Picnic, anyone? We also rode under an imposing castle, atop what seemed to be the highest peak in the nearby Vosges Mtns. Wherever we rode, there it was. We joked about riding to the top and wondered whether our 'better than yesterday' but still imperfect bikes had the gear ratios for the climb. (Or whether our legs and lungs were up to the task.) Finally, in Kintzheim (there are two, the one north of St. Hippolyte), we saw some alternative ...

... about cuckoo clocks and Black Forest cake. Although the working clock on the outside of the building was impressive, the workshop was a glorified cuckoo clock shop. Not my favorite excursion of the trip.

Our afternoon optional excursion to Colmar in Alsace made up for a disappointing morning. Located 40 miles south of Strasbourg on the Lauch River, the city proper has about 70,000 inhabitants. It is also the capital of the Alsatian ...
