Jon and I have a new deal. I plan a trip and drive, and he'll go anywhere. He'll even drive us home. One of the perks of subbing, I'm left with pockets of time to come up with trips. Trip number one, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, mostly because it fell neatly within the day trip range.

Part of our deal means I drive . . . The morning greeted us with a pea soup fog, enough to hide all road signs from any meaningful distance. GPS is good. I did drive fast ...
Rothenberg Ob Der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany wilwaycoToday I toured the town of Wurzburg, which is where the often traveled by tourists "Romantic Road" begins. Along with taking an English tour of the city, which ended up being a private tour as I was the only one who signed-up, I took a tour of the Wurzburg Residence, a UNESCO heritage site, which is a baroque palace of prince-bishops.

The Residence took 60 years to build and at one time there were 400 people ...
Würzburg, Bavaria, Germany trockieGuten tag from Germany!

We've been all over Europe, to random places like Bosnia and Slovakia, but we've never managed to make it to Germany. So here we are!

We flew through Iceland, and landed in Frankfurt yesterday. We picked up our very cute Smart Car convertible, and drove out west to the famous Romantic Road. This is a 220 mile long stretch of road running south that is dotted with castles and medieval towns. We stayed the night in ...
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany sql_spice... friendly streets.

When most people think of Nuremberg, they think of the trials. Unfortunately we were unable to visit Courtroom 600 because the trial memorial isn’t going to be finished until 2010, but also because the room is still used for proceedings to this day. Instead, on our first day, we walked through the town’s squares, saw a religious demonstration and debate that was even more ...
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany the_stamms... onto the fun…

The Tuesday before out Berlin trip, our group took a day trip to Nuremburg, which is only about an hour away by train. It was a lot of fun. Nuremburg is a very cute town with a lot to see. When we got there, we went to a Nazi museum and were supposed to have an hour and a half there, but were cut short about 45 minutes into the visit when 2 men walked through the museum stating "Fire, Exit." This was not urgent or anything, just a "oh, there is a fire, you ...
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany ab10... cemeteries, and schools were ransacked and destroyed. Synagogues were burned and many Jews were killed. The morning after they began to round up thousands of Jews and to deport them to concentration camps. I would like to share with you, as the Jews who returned that weekend shared with me, the commemoration of a sad historic date by the city of Bad Windsheim. The following is part the speech delivered by the Mayor, Ralf Ledertheil ...

The red Ferrari roaring by me at 110 (Rachel assures me he was going 120-140) made me feel as if I were being drafted by an F22. I enjoyed the new Mosel wine - light, sweet, and tasting of grapefruit. Some of it reminding me of the thirst quenching Canadian beverages I shared with Gail and Ron in Fairmont Hot Springs. Can it really be 10% alcohol volume? I have taken the plunge and braved the waters at the Frankenterme, floating out ...

A town filled with relics, beer halls, and people - people who are strolling and visiting and sweeping their sidewalks and petting their cats and dogs. I look out my window through a stork shaped sign onto a town square at a statue that decorates a fountain. Beneath me is the hotel restaurant filled with people who meet to talk about their day and drink fine German beer. For breakfast I ...
Bad Windsheim, Germany kitchenshrink... all that is out of the way we can get on to my trip! I road on a bike path for the fist little bit but once that ended it was on to the street for me. I wouldn't be nervous about this if I was back in the US but since I'm visiting a country I've never visited before and since I have no idea what the traffic laws are I was a bit worried about getting run over. But as I'm sure you could have guessed I made it back safe and ...
Bad Windsheim, Germany cameldoor... than I thought. We drove on. And I saw more and more signs for Ausfahrt! So I decided to ask my dad. Turns out Ausfahrt means exit... I felt like a dummy. But apparently there is a really touristy t-shirt that says. "Where the heck is Ausfahrt." I think I want that shirt. Nothing else really to say about the drive other than it was fun going 90 miles per our without the fear of getting pulled over.
