    After almost missing my train from Herzogenrath to Gladbeck, I was relieved to experience a Regional train which is generally far more crowded with local commuters. It was a joy to be reunited with my cousin Brunhild (from my Mother's side) in the nigh darkness.

    ... on the backs of the steel and coalmining industry and the Ruhr was at the forefront of the economic boom. When it ended in the early 90’s, coal production collapsed and the mines closed, leading to mass unemployment from which Gelsenkirchen has yet to fully recover.
