Rua do 5 de Outubro 47-49 Évora, Alentejo, Portugal, 7000-854, 351-266-737-210
On Saturday my Gap adventure tour began. We headed to Evora, Portugal on the afternoon of May 8th. Evora is a sleepy little town in central Portugal. We walked through some of the medevil streets and admired the ruins of a roman forum which included a temple to Diana, we also explord a ghoulish church decorated with the bones of over 1000 bodies and enjoyed a sleep in a hotel room bed. Since I do not have much to dicuss about Evora I will take an opportunity to ...
Évora, Alentejo, Portugal swints... working the counter tried to call us a taxi with no luck, kept saying nata, nata which was a bit frustrating. Finally after 30 min. of trying to communicate with them we walk into town and knock on one of the taxi driver´s doors, said he would drive us back to Beja! So crisis avoided, we made it back 4 hours after we intended and had a cook-up with Alex and Jason...who were smart enough to take the early bus!!!
Évora, Alentejo, Portugal ckulenguski... to look like pumpkins and having a feast of salmon and veggies. The hostel is completely empty and the town as well. Turns out that there´s a festival going on in a small town called Alvito, not too har but impossible to get to since all the taxis want 50 euros one way and no buses run on the weekends so it´s off to Evora.
Beja, Alentejo, Portugal ckulenguski... 37) but we don't really know what kind of terrain we are going into after that (when we hit Spain) so we're keeping a bit in reserve just in case there are some hard days ahead. It's been very hot today and this evening it hasn't cooled down much, as yet. On the coast, if we hadn't arrived at a campsite by 2.30, we couldn't wash our clothes because they wouldn't dry. Today we washed our clothes at 5 and they are now (7.30) bone ...
Beja, Portugal 50odd07 September 2008 overlooking the lake Markadia, on the way to Beja After the absolute horribleness of the day before last, the last 2 days have been bliss. In the past 2 days we have spoken to 2 cyclists from Boston, have seen a dead badger as well as the odd snake. We've seen herds of cows (sandy coloured with horns, a bit like the Brahmin type we see in India) and fields full of very lively pigs. Dave commented 'they ...
Beja, Alentejo, Portugal 50odd... celebrated both their Christian and Muslim heritage from that time, and it was realistic in nearly every aspect. We actually felt like we had gone back in time at some points! When we tired of shishkebabs, belly dancing, sangria, and swords, we found our way back to our quaint little room and had a good night's sleep. We now report to you from a cafe situated in a 15th century cathedral's gardens in Evora, Portugal. After arriving at our camp site and a ...
Évora, Alentejo, Portugal ryanandpatti... There is a church in this town made completely out of human bones. Apparently the two priests that build this church were too poor to buy building materials so they took the bones from the nearby cemetery. The crown molding of the church is decorated with skulls...certainly something you don´t find at Home Depot. -My bed at the hotel is the noisier than ****. I barely turn and the whole bed sounds ...
Évora, Portugal tonyinseattle... from the hills to wide open plains. Vineyards turned into Cork tree groves, which turned into Olive groves, which turned to Orange groves as we made our way south. Portugal is the world´s top producer of cork. Every 7 years or so, they strip the bark off with long pointed sticks and make the bottle corks out of the bark. The Dutch women had recommeded a place in Evora that sounded nice. It was a 17th century manor house turned hotel. It was like sleeping in ...
Evora, Portugal hippler... previous travels or through our everyday lives, though maybe a bit slower-paced. Perhaps we should read this as a sign that we have traveled enough through Western Europe for the time being and are ready to move on to more, shall we say, "challenging areas". Tomorrow morning we are going to be taking a bus to the southern coastal city of Faro, and then hopefully we will be have time to connect to another bus going east to Seville, Spain. On Thursday morning ...
Evora, Portugal globedecker... the h*ll out of Lisboa and rode out to Evora (central Portugal). It's a cool little town with plenty of churches, some Roman ruins and an old aquaduct. I like the smaller towns with their narrow cobblestone streets and everything within walking distance. There's a church with human bones all over too! I found a little store with €1.50 bottle of wine. I'll try that later and see if I remember anything in the morning. Tomorrow I go up north to ...
