... or Friday 22nd August 2014. If things go to plan, then I will have completed my Via Francigena pilgrimage either 9 or 10 days earlier than I first imagined, and I will get to spend my birthday in and around the Vatican City. What a great present that will be!!

... the train stopped and started and they put the train on the ship. When the train got down to Calabria, it was put onto a barge to go across the water to Sicily. I remember waking up during the night and feeling as if I was on a cruise ship as we went across the water. It was an interesting and fun way to travel even if we didn't get a lot of sleep.

As every year the depleting August heat is made more bearable by a village festival in Montalcino. L'Apertura delle Cacce (the opening of the hunting season) is celebrated on August 10 and 11, 2013 with folk music, archery contests and a pageantry parade. Program for the Weekend.
