... old port area. Jane never has any sense of direction and Brad's sense of direction often doesn't work in the northern hemisphere! We investigated the recommended restaurants, two of which we had seen last night, and we decided on one for dinner tonight. We debated as to what to do next but felt in need of a hot drink so made our way to a Salon de Thé we had seen last night. It looked lovely and it was! We ended up having lunch there and a delicious coffee ...

... La Rochelle was English until 1372 when the French took it over. Building of the Saint Nicolas tower began in the early 1300s and finished after the French took over and built two other towers as defence. ... just wish I could've appreciated it more. Missed our train by 15 minutes (and the toilets were closed). The moral of this story is to always have a Plan B for the trains; and use a loo whenever there's one available! I had to go to a bar.

We had an hour or so to fill in when we got to Bordeaux, so we walked towards the river. It was going to be too far, so we just sat and watched the world go ...

... What has happened to France's summer?? Never mind. We had hot showers and the best siesta in the world that afternoon so the rain has its pluses. I keep getting surprises. I thought La Rochelle was going to be a small town and there was going to be a little bridge going over to the island. How wrong could I be. Yes I could have done my homework on the internet but that would have spoilt all the surprises. La Rochelle has ...
