France sucks at Halloween

... English in the entire town. We found our hostel super late at night (and they don't make hostels in France like they did in Spain... no more free internet!). The next morning, we walked into town not really knowing what to see or do. But as we were looking for a quick Petit Dejuner (breakfast) we stumbled upon the Saturday market. We sat at a cafe on the square and had the most amazing breakfast 5 euro can buy if you ...

Amorous or Foolhardy?

Over the last months of travel, we’ve met and talked with many people about what we’re doing. As you can imagine, we’re greeted with many responses. Most can’t fathom a trip without end or adgenda. Some say they admire what we’re doing. Setting off onour own, turning our back on convention and creating an adventure. Others think we’re fools. Although the woman who said that ...

... parents for a trip to Cassis, Toulon, and for a drive around the Sainte-Victoire mountain. Yes, I was an 'honoury' northerner for the day (Lizzie, je blague, je blague!). Cassis is absolutely beautiful, picture perfect, with a little marina and a beach, with amazing turquoise-coloured water. We had a huge breakfast there which meant I didn't need to eat again until 7, and then headed along the coast to Toulon, where we walked through a market to one of the marinas, which ...

Aix marks the spot

... yesterday, Saturday, and it is cooler but still nice. The trip here was spectacular with many olive groves and big mountains. Today we went on a tour to Les Beax - another medieval town with a castle - poor Graham and on his birthday too. Then we went winetasting and to the premier olive oil producers in France. The Mistrql was blowing on the tour and it was very cold but warmer back here in the camp. Tomorrow we explore Aix on foot then we go to Avignon.

LOST & FOUND IN MARSEILLES- BLUE BALLS & ALL

... s how. From there I simply validate my account and I’m part of a network which allows me free access from many different parts of France. But I don’t understand; I still need a router and signal coming from this hotel. Why do I even need this network? And where’s my little blue ball down there? I ask too many questions. Sometimes it’s better just to take what’s given and be grateful. That ...

Marseille Survival Guide

... Marseille is just a big seaport that happens to be France's second biggest city and starting place for points more interesting. I am glad I was able to spend a few days here to absorb its unique culture.

But having spent three days here I have gotten to experience the people first hand. Last year in Paris I found the locals to be nice enough contrary to horror stories I had heard from others. Now to all of you whom I told ...

Marseille (+ filmpje!)

... wa koers richting Marseille. Het was buiten ondertussen al zweeeeten. Dus volle bak airco in de auto! De rit duurde ongeveer een kleine 2 uur. Gelukkig hadden we cruisecontrol.

From Monaco to Marseille

... are claimed to be the highest cliffs in Europe (I must check that as when I went to Iceland last year they claimed to have the highest cliffs). Thus ends our visit to the coast of Provence - our next port of call is the Camargue, not far to the west. ps: just for a bit of light-hearted entertainment, while studying the map of France I found a number of place names that are amusing in English - Condom, Gap, Corps, Mens, Six-Fours, Die, Apt, Percy (if you don't believe me look them up).

Marseille

We spent Halloween in Marseille and were hoping the locals would be celebrating it the way we're used to back in New York. They weren't. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great for our 1st day but me made the most of things and had a great hike up to the main cathedral on the second morning before heading off to Nice. Not much else to report but a little sightseeing and a few pictures around town. .

A Dirty City

... we were late. "No," we replied, "we're two hours early," and went to get breakfast and look at the boats at the old port. Vieux Port When we returned, we learned that we had in fact been late, because apparently we didn't get the memo that told us to be there at 8:30--our documents had listed 11:30 as the start time. And the session we had missed in the morning was the actual training part--the only session that didn't revolve around ...
