Rishikesh - India's Haight-Ashbury

... shrine who painted a red dot on our forehead, but when we got to the top there was just one shrine. It had a lone attendant who kept up a chant, and Matt kneeled to greet him. All of a sudden we were massed by a crowd up pilgrims and Hindu children, and Sarah was forced to the back of the crowd. The priest painted another dot on Matt's head, offered some of the leftover paint to the shrine, and then touched it to a brass container filled with water from the Ganges River. Upon ...

Waterfalls and balloons

... gobble gobbled like starving turkeys in our attempts to finish up and get going. Today was Tamar's birthday, and the ever so romantic Boaz had filled their room with balloons while she slept. Their purpose served (what a delightful surprise), there was now had a roomful of balloons to dispose of, so we spent a while walking the streets handing out colourful orbs of joy to the children of Rishikesh. I felt rather like the ...

Yoga and music

... Yoga Festival was also happening that week at the Parmarth ashram in the Ram Jhulla area, so lots going on. On the to-do list was to check out the Maharishi Ashram where the Beatles stayed. The ashram is now abandoned, and we tried to sneak into it through the back door and got kicked out by the security guard. If we make it back to Rishikesh in a few weeks time, Rajiv might try to get in again, this time through the front ...

Going with the flow in Rishikesh

... was justified. After arranging myself awkwardly on the yoga mat, we gave each other the traditional ´Namaste´greeting and then it was down to business. Much to my relief, instead of trying to arrange me into the shape of a coat hanger straight away we began the session with a very odd (but I´m assured common) ritual. I was asked to breath quickly through each nostril and then determine which one had a better flow of air. Apparently this is done to help rebalance the harmony of ...

Me and my sexy legs

Alright, I don't know what the deal is but everybody in India stares at my legs. Is it that they are so white they blind the locals, is it cause I'm practically the tallest person any of them have ever seen, or am I just that sexy? I'm back here in Rishikesh at the base of the Himalayas. Was up in the mts. for about 10 days. Was nice and cool, saw some huge mts including Nanda Devi. Yet again, I can't post ...

Safari at Rajaji National Park and Cricket Match

... see elephants or tigers out, but it was fun standing in the backseat of a jeep plowing through rocky streams. It was exciting just knowing that there was a possibility that the excursion could be attacked by a tiger. We saw a few monkeys, lots of spotted deer, 4 or 5 peacocks, a monitor, an ugly wild boar, and lots of elephant poo. We also saw a bunch of tiger paw prints on the road. The prints were ridiculously big; at least the size of my hand ...

Endless Song

... have the liberty of choice. There was never a dull moment in our yatra. It has been a remarkable journey. Lady luck was on our side. We had wonderful weather through out. No illness, except minor ailments like cough and cold, head ache or slight fever. No one suffered high altitude sickness. Praise be god for His mercies, all of us enjoyed the yatra and are back to share the happy and thrilling moments with others as I have done here.. I know now after a long ...
