... was all trimmed and his hair was all gone, although it did look like the barber nicked his lip with the scissors. This was their last excursion to the city.

I watched from afar as the entire group of them marched with their bags from the hostel down to the bus station and jump on a bus headed for Mendoza. I quietly wished them a safe journey and returned to my place in the square, ready to meet and defend a new group of friends.

During the day we walked around the old town eating Empaņadas every so often. The main square was nice but the church bells seem to have been replaced (presumably in the 90's) with what sounds like the old Nokia ring tone, so the ancient spell of the dusty cobbled plaza dappled with pink and purple blossom is broken on the hour every hour. ... have a really great pizza and a bottle of Malbec. One of the few places in the world I suspect where a great bottle of wine is half the price of the pizza! In the morning we decide to head on down Ruta 40 but not before we have visited the cemetery atop the hill outside of town. The road winds around the hill all the way to the top. Along the way there are signs depicting Christ on his way to the crucifixion which gradually get more gruesome as you ascend. Once at the top ...

... the outskirts of town it was then a stoney staircase wriggling up the side of the hill, thankfully shaded by trees! It actually only took about 40 minutes as we beasted it up and were rewarded with great views of the valley and the city of Salta nestled below.
