Morelia, Mexico

The few days we spent in Morelia coincided with the city's 468th anniversary. The city had many visitors in town and events to be seen. The celebration culminated with a parade and fireworks show backdropped against the town's beautiful cathedral. We also got the chance to take in a true Mexican rodeo in which only one cowboy was carted off on a stretcher...those guys are tough (or nuts).

Dia de los Muertos

... of drunken tourists trampling over people's graves to take photos of the few old women who had come to honour their dead. Relatives would leave offerings of the deceased's favourite foods and place orange Cempazúchitl flowers by the graves, which are supposed to draw out the spirits of the dead with their enticing scent. However it was disappointing to see so many intrusive tourists flocking around them, and it seems unlikey the dead could have heard their families calling over such a ...

Madness in Michoacan

... Mexicans took us to a trendy club with an outside bar and a magnificent view of the city lights down in the valley below. I spent the vast majority of my weekend's money on one bottle of Bacardi, from which I got about two drinks as many others helped themselves. Still, we had a great time and it was definitely one of the coolest clubs I've ever been to. We headed back to the bus around 3am but it was only then that the real fun kicked off. Upon returning we consumed far too much of ...

Unpronounceable places!

... with masks of old men and women, grey hair, hats with long streaming ribbons and traditional sandals with wooden soles. They dance bent over with a cane to look old, but the intricate rhythms they make with their feet take lots of energy! A bottle of water in my bag leaked and my camera got wet so the pictures end abruptly with lunch - unfortunately none of los viejitos. I hadn´t budgeted for a new camera on this trip....(sigh)

A whole week-grab a cup of coffee before opening!

... Can be hot, but rains a lot, so is usually cool and wet. I{m glad since there is no air conditioning! We{ve had one major storm cuando estaba lloviendo a cántaros (it was raining buckets!) Still working on that....)

Okay, my next project is to figure out how to download pictures so you can see some of the things I{m talking about. Getting Better

Almost everyone is better. Every once in awhile someone feels sick or something but then it passes. My dad and I went to the market today. It was pretty early in the morning so they were just setting up. We still have to work on our numbers in Spanish. We had to ask the people so many time how much it was. We finally figured it out. We are without water a lot know. It is ...

Mariposa, mi Amigos!

... there are turkish baths offered in the area, where according to Luis, "You'll stink like sulfur for days, but you will feel better." He related to us a bit of indigenous folklore, concerning a tall mountain we were driving towards, saying it was at this point that the prophecy was passed to a woman that the rulers of the land would be born in another land. On that same mountain there are colonies of butterflies (which Luis said he would make trips to on ...

Morelia and Patzcuaro

... we decided to take a day trip to Patzcuaro. Class hostel by the way, www.hostelmorelia.com, check it out! Best day for me so far. Don´t know if Collins was too pushed but I really liked this little town. It was a little dirty but less polluted than the cities and it was situated beside a little tranquil, albeit also dirty, lake. The people were all villagers and I felt like I was seeing the real Mexico at last. Patzcuaro is famous for its good market ...
