      ... open, where people had caked themselves in mud, and were letting it set in the sun. Having been warned not to wear our best bathers (as the smell never comes out), we had come prepared, wearing old underwear, which went straight into the bin afterwards! George braved it first, as I wanted to take a photo of him. Some of the mud, and the steam coming from the ground was quite hot, and the sulphur fumes were powerful.       ... to the ferry. Apparently, they thought they were getting a lift, not just directions. We got to be all world-wise and cool saying follow us as we walked the 400m down to the wharf. Down at the port, we easily bought tickets, wandered over the road to buy some lunch, came back and boarded.       ... I watched his double masts from 10 to 3, if like a clock, 12 is straight up. boy, it sure was an uncomfortable ride for all aboard that boat. We hung out, and hung on to Milena all days.       ... fire down the mountainside was still very special. If you listened carefully you could hear the lava flowing into the sea! Mitch also had a drive of the boat. Lucky boy. Another highlight on Lipari was renting the bright orange 'Citroen shitbox' (our nickname) car. Stew needed lessons in starting it, stopping it, braking and accelerating.
