Carretera de los Llanos, s/n Avila, Castile-León, Spain and Canary Islands, 05600
No sense in repeating what we did this week because it was the same as the last week we volunteered, just in a different location. We talked more and ate more food and tried to act, again. We like to say that we have never eaten so much food and had so little activity as we have had this past two weeks. It just negated all the workout we have done the last four months to lose weight. Oh well. On a side note, the Puerta de Gredos hotel, also a 4 stars hotel, was 110% better than the hotel we ...
Avila, Castile-León, Spain and Canary Islands jarrettalane
... the Basilica de St. Vincente dates back to the 10th century. It was a very interesting structure which apparently took hundreds of years to build and includes architecture styles of several different influences from gothic to renaissance. There is also a beautiful Cathedral (Catedral de Avila) that originally was built as a fortress. We didn't get to see the inside, but you can see the outside is gorgeous. Overall, the town of Avila is a beautiful little ...
Avila, Castile-León, Spain and Canary Islands dineymarieWell, I know I haven't posted for the majority of this semester. There are a few reasons for that: One, you never know who reads your blogs and I was getting to the point with friends of friends of friends reading it that I knew I had no control of who was reading my posts, so I didn't know how to filter myself. Thus I filtered everything. Two, I've been busy and it wasn't ever the write moment to write. I know that's a lame excuse, but unlike China where I had a huge room to ...
Sevilla, Spain catedoyle... d require another five minutes walk. Better, but still not great. So it was off into the downpour we went, me being able to finally test out the waterproof cover that I bought years ago for my backpack. That worked quite well, incidentally. Problem was, it took nearly an hour for our specific bus to show up and the people across the way waiting for another one had to suffer in the shivering wet for at least as long. Our "five minute walk" from the bus stop started off fine ...
Sevilla, Spain xerius... Christian conquest of the city in 1248. Seville's cathedral, begun in 1402, is the largest Gothic building in Europe. We only spent half a day in Córdoba because we then traveled to Seville. I always get confused when people say Seville because I think of it as Sevilla - I think it's the same place, but I'm not sure why there are different spellings. I'll be sure to ask Concha one day. Here, we stayed in Hotel América for the rest of the ...
Sevilla, Spain ccarliniOur night in Carmona was fabulous, we'd been staying in the very cheapest places we could find (that didn't have cockroaches larger than us), skimping wherever we could in order to feel better about splashing out for our last night on this outing ... in a Parador. These are state-run hotels that occupy particularly old or beautiful buildings throughout Spain, and for the under 30s they have a special ...
Carmona, Spain nathan_and_clem... and settled in. There were no subtitles, but the conversation generally didn't move too fast (boring movie, remember?) so I could keep up for the most part. Even the parts I wouldn't be able to translate I understood the general point of the scene, I thought. However, I was mildly disappointed with myself that I hadn't understood it better. When we all talked about the movie afterwards, I realized that I may have set the bar for myself pretty high since I had to explain basic premises ...
Sevilla, Spain catedoyle... craggly roads, many of which were vertical and dirt, through hidden mountain villages to Algeciras and then met us in Tarifa so tired from riding he passed out. Tarifa Spain is the southern most perch of Europe, and enjoyed for its proximity to Africa and its' fast ferry there, as well as the wind and water sports. Surf shops everwhere and loads of foreign surfers and ...
Tarifa, Spain onsixwheels... befriended an older couple sitting in front of us, and between my broken Spanish (Tracy and Freddy, you would be so proud of me), and their gestures, we were made to understand everything that happened during the bullfight, which we probably would not have understood otherwise. The colors and spirit of the crowd was pretty cool, however, the amount of blood and ultimate torture suffered by the bull was awful. In case you have never been to a bullfight, there are 3 phases of ...
