Athens...or Tucson, Arizona?

... We saw the Acropolis and the Parthenon, where the views were amazing. The sun was pretty brutal however, we're hoping to go again when we return to Athens, at night when everything is lit up. We saw Zeus's temple (or what's left of it), Hadrian's Library and the Agora. The temple of Hephaistos was also quite beautiful, with a great view of the Agora. By the time we got to the famous archeological museum, I was too braindead to appreciate much.

I ...

... the country achieved it's independence. It was nice to have a conversation about history with someone who wasn't afraid to criticise their countries government or admit mistakes without blaming another nation for their problems (not something you'll find in most places in the Balkans). Unfortunately it was time for me to leave and I said goodbye and walked slowly back to the train station, I never caught the blokes name. A pity. I sat in Athens stations overcrowded ...

History Lesson Part 1

... remnants of the Temple of Olympian Zeus. The temple, when it was completed would have been huge, however only a handful of columns were still standing and one had collapsed 150 years ago and had been left where it fell. After a flying visit to Hadrian's Arch, I started the climb up the to the most distinctive landmark in the country. You can see The Acropolis from all over Athens, so the view of Athens from the top is what you ...

... two, even on this trip Tirana would run Athens close but what these cities have and Athens is lacking is charm. I've always been able to find good things to say about the places I've traveled. In fact I don't think I've ever been anywhere I didn't like. However with Athens I struggle, even with all the history and architectural treasures I'm struggling to find good things to say. It's the people that are the problem; Athenians have this arrogance about them, a mentality that they are ...

... on tõeliselt kitsad ja isegi kaardi järgi on raske orienteeruda. Võib-olla sellepärast TomTomi navigatsioonisüsteemis Kreekat Euroopa kaartide all polegi?

Greece- Athens and Santorini

... Our first two days here were spent wandering the narrow cobble-stone streets and alleyways, eating in small cafes with views of the Acropolis (because of this, they feel they can charge 10 Euro's for a beer), and generally just people watching. While people watching, I noticed that glitter seems to be in. They say that Europe is about 2-3 years ahead of us in terms of fashion, so be afraid if that is the case- or get ready to break out that ...

The Scholar Ship: Day 1

... I nearly fell asleep on the way to Piraeus; it was a long drive but soon we could see the other ships and the noise level rose with the excitement level and I could stay awake to watch. Check-in was easy enough; in the cruise bay we stood in line for our cabin assignment and luggage tags and then someone took our luggage to the ship for us. We boarded, had our visas checked, and then had to leave our passports with them. That was unnerving at ...

... been over developed. Often tourist destinations can turn into places that have been ruined because too many people go there. Santorini has turned more into a cruise boat destination and therefore the passengers come in for the day to shop and eat and then go back to sleep on their cruise ships. We ended up moving to Thira town and stayed in place built on the side of the cliff that ...

... with relatively few passengers. The weather was good, and the dramatic views of first the receding city of Tangier, then the coasts of the strait on either side, and finally the Pillars of Heracles, Ceuta and Gibraltar, were a lot of fun. Despite the fact that the ship was Moroccan, none of the shops or restaurants took Moroccan dirhams -- only euros. But the bartender kindly made an exception. Sailing past the impressive Gibraltar into Algeciras, I couldn't ...

... the district of Psiri but its lanes of bars and restaurants were dead (most only opening after midnight due to the holiday according to another of Paul’s sources), so we settled for a couple of cheap and nasty pork gyros each and some bottles of Mythos beer nearby. It was the second gyros meal of the day for me and the third for Paul, and as for the beer I think it’s so called because although the label says it’s Greek it’s really a myth – by the ...
