... end was the work "Departures" and we thankfully joined the queue at the desk.

They confiscated our passports at the desk and after taking our photo, issued us with an identity card which stands in for our passport. Then we went through security and out to our ship. The passports will be returned at the end of the trip. We use the ID cards each time we leave or return to the ship.

Oh my……….what a very very tall ship ...

The arch, built of Pentelic marble, bears two inscriptions. The one on the side facing the Acropolis reads - This is Athens, the ancient city of Theseus - while the other, on the side facing the sanctuary and the extension of the city by Hadrian, reads - This is the city of
Hadrian and not of Theseus. Truly, this is a masterpiece of ancient Greek architecture.
