Danube-Main Canal

At Bamberg we left the Danube-Main Canal. The canal was completed in 1992 and allows ships to travel from the North Sea to the Black Sea. This connection had been dreamed of since Charlemagne tried digging one in the 8th century. Another attempt was made in the 1800s but the advent of the railroad doomed it. It took 20th century technology to make it possible. The canal itself has 34 locks out of the total of ...

... palaces. The New Palace contained a huge rose garden and had a great view of the city. During our free time Jack, Suzanne and I wandered around town admiring the architecture. We stopped at a snack shop where I had a large soft pretzel and Coke for only 1.69 euros. Cheapest purchase I’ve made yet. Usually a Coke costs at least 2 euros ($3).
We were back on ship for a late lunch and passed time watching the countryside slide by and going through locks.

The best day, but my last day.

... strange, because it seemed so fragile and beautiful, but really made it special.

A couple blocks away we visited the cloister garden and then followed a stone wall to the Burgtor (castle gate) and entered the castle gardens. There once was a castle here, but it was destroyed in an earthquake in 1356, now only the gardens remain. They are surrounded on three sides by low walls, keeping you from falling down the 80 yard tall cliffs below. It had splendid views ...

Finally Nuremberg!

I caught the train from Eisenach which required two connections. Unfortunately they changed the platform that the train was to arrive on without warning me so I missed it and caught the wrong train. Thus I finally got to Nuremberg an hour and a half later (1700) then I intended. So I have to see what I want to see tomorrow. I feel like I have been riding and jumping from train to train all day. Nuremberg is more interesting than I thought it would be. It has ...

I'm tired of train travel

... the main street of Konigstrasse, which had some interesting buildings but it was all pretty much reconstructed after WWII. We passed by St. Lawrence church and went inside. It was very beautiful and different from anything I’ve seen. It keeps amazing me how different churches can be. This one was entirely stone inside, a light brown color. The columns were adorned with many of the original statues. The church itself was pretty much flattened in WWII, but they had ...

This is a once in a lifetime experience, and I have lots of pictures, videos, and journal entries about everything and everyone. Things are awesome. The people and places are awesome, and I'm loving every minute of it.

So, if you're reading this, it is very likely that I miss and love you.

... be held responsible if we do not actively fight against oblivion of these historic facts. As former Federal President Herzog put it: 'Remembrance must not end, it must continue to remind future generations of the need to be vigilant. What we need now is a form of remembrance which will work in the future. it must express sorrow over suffering and loss, but it must also encourage constant vigilance in struggle against any reoccurrence, and it ...

Another reminder not to put off important things because when the moment passes and the opportunity is gone it might be forever. JUST DO IT! Still taking short jaunts and trying to get to Strasbourg for an overnight. My camera is holding pictures that are ready to bring my days home to you. Hope to get them downloaded and shared before I head home.

Not only do I have to remember where I parked in order to get to work the next day but so I can run out after 8:30 to buy a ticket to lodge in the driver's window in order to escape a parking a ticket. What can I say? Small town but some things never change. I have grown to love the traffic circles. I can circle forever until I get my bearings or make up my mind exactly where I want to go. It really is so civilized. Although farmland, 9 out of ...

"What's so special about that place?"

... walking up and down it, visiting the various shops. I saw a bakery, some restaurants, some clothing stores, and a tailor. Then I came to the most interesting part of todays trip. Roland the mighty, protector of Windseim, slayer of her enemies, and safeguard of her secrets. Actually it was just a big statue with a sign on one side that says "Roland" and some big things on the other side that have a bunch of names and dates ...
