... to really witness the true spirit of the festival.

The next morning we spent another hour buying crafts in the market in Patzcuaro before setting off on our way home. Somehow we managed to transform what should have been a three or four hour drive into a seven hour epic. However, despite getting slightly lost it was still an awesome journey; encompassing mountains, forests and small rural towns. Had we got back on time then we would have missed the unforgetable sight of the ...
Patzcuaro, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico duncantucker... it was still an enjoyable ride, for I made a few friends and the Mexican guys continued to party throughout the journey. Seemingly never tired, downbeat or too hungover to drink, the Mexicans blasted out Reggaeton and brought round rum for us to down straight from the bottle. We arrived home late that night, tired after a fun but exhausting three days on the road. Michoacan is meant to be the best place to celebrate the Day of the Dead so I should be returning there in early November.

I wanted to get up there and correct them, but I behaved myself!

Yesterday afternoon I went to a music workshop for children and adults. They taught guitar, violin and wooden flute in groups and then put them together at the end of the workshop. This takes place twice a week, so I´ll go again next week. I´ve borrowed a ...
Morelia, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico sehablaespanol... but unlike the Aztecs who sacrificed their own people as well as prisoners, they sacrificed only prisoners they had captured in battles against other empires. The pyramids are not complete because after the Spanish arrived they used much of the stone to build their churches and monasteries. They also ransacked the pyramids hoping they would find treasure inside, but there wasn´t anything inside - except more rocks! However, part on one has ...
Patzcuaro, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico sehablaespanolSo I{m not a very good blogger - I left you hanging with my late night (well late for me, not for Mexicans) arrival at my lodgings in Guanajuato last Saturday night. So much has happened in one week!

Last Sunday morning with much regret and a great deal of anxiety I took my leave of Carmelita and my comfortable room and headed off to Morelia, which would be my home for the next month. First a word about Mexican long distance buses (ETN) - they{re great - muy ...

Patzcuaro, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico amazingjourneys... an hour or two sitting in the main plaza writing in my journal. Journaling in a public place is a great way to spend an afternoon because you can people watch and eavesdrop while you clear your mind. Another perk is that every time I sit down to write, it's guaranteed that someone will come up to me and initiate a conversation. Yesterday I met some girls that wanted to practice their English and a crazy Mexican Don Juan that speaks Spanish ...

Morélia, Mexico bogit... just pay you?" He was amicable to this arrangement (of course) and produced a piece of paper in which we would fold our "deposit" for the violation and hand to him. We did this and he sped off into the proverbial sunset. Now, 600 pesos isn't alot of money (about $55 dollars) but it is way more than we were told we would pay to get out of this situation. In hindsight we think we could have gotten the fine lowered by playing poor and dumb but ...
Morelia, Morelia, Mexico itsgotimeWe finally arrived in Mexico City two days ago. Javier picked us up from the airport and drove us to his home town, Morelia (about 3 hours away). On the way we stopped in Toluca, where he studied, and ate our first mexican tacos. After a couple more hours on the highway we passed through about 6 toll booths which we found out that one company would build 20-30miles of road and quit, then another company would ...
