... we left for an early night. Breakfast is included and brought to your room (I don't think they have a dining room here) but room service is always welcome! At 8.30 as requested we had a knock at the door and a lady brought in a tray of coffee, orange juice and pastries, not bad for £60 a night. We ate it on the balcony. So we have spent the first day just wondering around the town. It was really hot today and quite busy because a large Carnival cruise ship ...

... drinker. At around midnight, almost everyone went home. After all, most of us had worked all day and had to get up early in the morning. The trip home, with no cabs anywhere, was an experience. My colleague Celia and I found a Mexican couple in a car. They were also on their way home from a Christmas party. On the evidence of what we saw the Mexican tourist board has done a good job of marketing a site with little restoration. Every road to the site, every path into the ruins are lined with Mexicans, Chinese selling genuine Maya artefacts. I put him outside on the balcony as he would just get trod on again, but alas he died. The boys gave him a good send off; probably right off the balcony, although they told me they buried him. Hmmm.

We were pretty shattered after such a long journey. By now it was about 11PM UK time and we had been ...

... off to look for ‘The Yak’ hostel. A new, but continually ‘featured’ hostel with evidently a great ‘vibe’, and things like movie nights and live music. When we got there we found it completely staffed by young Israelis with the exception of the service staff. I don’t want to bang on about it so much but the place was pretty underwhelming. I mean the ‘vibe’ they were right about, we had one night packed in around a solo ...
