Welcome to Miami Beach, Mexico, otherwise known as Playa del Carmen. Even though I've been in North America all along, the Yucatan and, in particular, here in Playa del Carmen, feels very, well, American, as in, United States of America. As in, McDonald's, Wal-Mart, malls, wide palm tree-lined boulevards, chain stores, people speaking English and asking for payment in American dollars, loud tourists and louder music. If not for the speed bumps and the police presence, you'd never ...

It didn't take long to realize that our first (and most recurring) priority was finding something for Carmen to eat that was both healthy and acceptable. Closest was a Mega Comercial Mexicana. We had a plane to catch and they had a bus to find but the great news was that we were all heading in the same direction and refused to believe we wouldn't find a way to meet up somewhere in ...
... the city bus. We spent a lovely day at Akumal. We had a beautiful lunch of nachos al Pastor on the beach. I tried snorkeling! I failed miserably! Didn't see any fish - bummer! We ended the day with lemonade while sitting I'm bar swings on 5 th ave. 5th ave is a pedestrian street with lots of shops and high priced restaurants . We were "barked" into an Argentine restaurant where we ...
