Melaka, Home of the Baba-Nonyas

... time.

At night, Melaka lights up with lots of coloured lights illuminating roofs and walls and picking out the banks of the river. There are a growing number of western style cafes and eateries but the ambiance is pretty low key. The park near the sea front was one of the few places we found loud blaring music and this was directed a the few groups of local people sitting out and enjoying a late night meal amidst the animals made of lights (very tasteful!).

The Land Down Under

... Big Mouth Bar), but this time also got to walk to the pavilion along the pier, which had burnt down before. Whilst we were there the Melbourne comedy festival was on and we got to catch the Puppetry of Penis show - not quite what Damo was expecting!! From Melbourne we hired a car and picked up our mate Kate - now the 9th country we had met her in, and drove the coast road from Melbourne to Sydney in 2 days, a route we hadn't taken before, as we had taken the bus before ...

... a t-shirt on. So we got in a taxi to the bus station then a bus over to Malacca which takes about 4 hours including time spent at the border.

Very easy border formalities, quick look up at me and a couple of stamps. Country number 4 - Malaysia. Just crossing the causeway instantly makes me feel like I'm now in Asia. Singapore didn't really feel like Asia. More a western city with Asian people. Where as in Malaysia it looks and feels more Asian ...

2. Tag in Melaka

... Kaninchen.

The historic city of Melaka

... Street part of Chinatown. Along with the usual sunglasses and shops selling plastic tat that you usually get at markets, there were also loads of stalls from the arts and craft shops and galleries, and also loads of really nice food! Jonker Street also has a couple of really nice bars where you could sit with a cold beer and watch hundreds of people walking past through the market. It was great. Danny got himself another fan. A bloke who was ...

... saying something along those lines. Still, if it weren't for him, I wouldn't have been able to have had my photo taken in front of it, along with dozens of ohter camera snapping tourists. I'd like to point out that it was whilst I was happily taking photos of the detail from the carvings above the gateway that Jo was seconded for a second photo shoot from another Asian tourist who must have mistook her for somebody else. With a wild look in her eye and a grin on her face, she ...

... market. So we spent more time shopping. Tina was in her element!!! She claims this was going to be the last time!!!! One eveing we went out and got to see the malaysian record holder for piercing a coconut with his fingers. It was crazy when he showed us his finger afterwards it was a complete mess. Swollen and completely bent. We thought there must be an easier way to get the juice out!! We then went to ...

A first taste of Asia proper....

... in the very centre. However, there was quite alot of genuine culture to see outside of this, the highlight of which was an old Baba Nyonya (descendants of early Chinese immigrants to Malaya) house which had been converted into a museum. I did a tour here which was very interesting and gave a good insight into the customs of the people through the generations. Met some nice people in the hostel that evening on the rooftop ...
