Baywatch Aoshima

The Bar Miyazaki

... anything to go by. DJ events, Live bands, Ladies Nights, Quiz Events and even Fish & Chips on the menu, its just like stepping back into a bar at home for a few hours, except that there are a great diverse crew of people there from all over the world who can give you the rundown on almost anything and everything thats happening around town. I was only in there for two nights but i really felt like a local with ...

Emergency Brakes and a Tiny Rental Car

... to turn it off. We just couldn't figure that one out so I went to the rental guy with my electronic translator in hand. I can only translate one word at a time so when I came in and announced emergency he got all excited. Good thing I type fast. When he figured out what I meant we all had a good laugh! Spent a couple of days touring around Kirishima Japan and enjoying a wonderful onsen. Hot spas every day and good food in ...

Life is too short to spend it in cube land!

The inevitable question, "What does it feel like to be back?" It's a sensory overload to have everyone chattering at you (and each other) in unaccented English. After 9+ months of zero native English speaking people, it's overwhelming to have all the English conversation, radio, TV, newspapers and magazines. Suddenly, I can understand what they want me to buy and I still don't want it. I am surprised though, how non ...

Thats all folks!

... created. The museum talked about events leading up to the bombing, why Hiroshima was the chosen target and the extent of the damage at the time to places and people. A very well put together museum. Leaving Hiroshima we cut west towards the Sea of Japan then down south across the Kanmon Striates (under the striates, through a tunnel!) and onto our last island mass of the trip Kyushu. From there we hugged the east ...

The End is Koko!

... have in Japan. In India we could always toss us, and our bikes on the first bus to go by, but in Japan, we know we're not allowed on the trains, or the buses, and the vast majority of people drive very small cars, and on top of all that, the language barrier is nearly absolute. So to have a VAN, big enough for 2 drowned rats and their full entourage of filthy, soaked panniers and bikes, pull up and offer to help, was absolutely amazing. It actually gets better. The ...

Unreal Part II

Mushi Mushi (How the Japanese answer the phone), I`m very open to experiencing new things, but I would LOVE a meal without some sort of fish product. My stomach is rebelling from my new Japanese diet and my appetite is almost completely gone. I`m eating about as much as Meghan or Oliver in a given day. Today was my first vocational ...

Craziness

Unreal is only word I can use to describe the last 2 days. Just a hint: 3 days in Japan = 3 nights of Karaoke! We have been treated like rock stars since the day we arrived. 5-10 Japanese Rotarians are constantly shuffling us around to various sightseeing destinations. In 2 days I have learned how to perform Zen Buddhist Meditation Ceremony complete with punishment, visited ancient burial grounds, toured a Plasma TV factory, walked ...

Surprise at the Airport!

Ok! I made it to Japan, however at the airport I was quite surprised to see 20 rotarians with a HUGE banner welcoming us to Japan. I was not in any shape to meet anyone, but I didn't have a choice. We were quickly shuffled off to our Hotel where the local Rotarians had dinner waiting on us. We met our host families that we will stay with starting Monday Night. However, only a few people could speak English and my host could not. When Japanese people ...

Made it!

I completed the long flight to Japan. My plan to sleep during the flight worked well. I slept for nearly 8 hours during the flight. I am on the flight to Miyazaki from Nigoya. I am hungry, tired and I have travel grime. I can't wait to get to the hotel and settle in. It's 5:20 pm in Japan and 4:20 am in the Eastern time zone. I've been traveling since 7:30 am yesterday. By the time I arrive in Miyazaki, I will have been traveling for ...
