... when/if we made any distance in a southerly direction. We finally left Martinique at noon on a Saturday and made such great time that we had to reduce sails so that we didn't arrive in the dark. On Sunday evening, we were blessed with a wonderful show by the dolphins somersaulting in front of Quest's bow. It is as if they know how much we humans enjoy seeing their tricks. Monday morning 7:30 am we were in Chagauramas Harbor and waiting for the Customs and ...

... one of the large supermarkets on the island. Shaz loves the French ones because the selection is huge and the fresh food is great, much better than the dodgy food available in supermarkets on the British Islands. After leaving Forte de France we headed North to a small historic village called St. Pierre. At first glance this village looked a little run down and not terribly inviting. The coastline at this end of the island is much different from the light sandy ...

... and set up a lunch date. It was during the wonderful conversation with Hans and Hazel that Chris brought up our electrical problem. Hans offered suggestions which, translated for the non-electrical boiled down to, "just unplug the sucker." That seemed to eliminate the concern that we might blow up our batteries, so now we didn't have to leave Martinique just yet. Bonjour encore Martinique! We sailed north past Diamond Rock, a ...

Heading North

16/04/08, Wednesday, 18:00, St. Pierre, Martinique Had a nice sail up here today - the wind and current were with us. Mountains here are great. Virgin Mary statue overlooking the town. Watched a pod of dolphins play in clear water on our bow. They were so close, I could hear them breathe when they surfaced.

... a birthday, or sitting in Fort-de-France watching all the tourists! It really is fun here. I fly home on Saturday, arrive in Seattle on Sunday and will be headed back to my house to spend a day and a half there before heading back to school. I can't wait! Oh yes, I am 20 years old in exactly one week...oh my gosh. :S My best regards and warmest wishes, especially to those in cold weather..I hope that it warms up soon! A bientot!

I have to say this was my favourite spot, mainly because after a bit of sunbathing in the gorgeous bay we sat in plastic chairs in the sand with our wet bathers on and had a rhum, before another great Creole meal. The first nite we were there we were having a rhum in a little local bar and there were two guys who were clearly ready to go home. As Nic talked in French one of the ...

... projects. We maneuvered FS through the numerous reefs to an outstanding snorkeling sight near Great Bird Island. We really hated to leave but we knew our part had finally arrived to repair our ProFurl forestay and we needed to get back to Falmouth Harbour to have it installed. On our journey down the coast the conditions were perfect for a lunch anchorage at Cade's Reef where we also enjoyed excellent snorkeling. With our refitted genoa and topped up water and fuel we were ready ...

Fort de France - again

... Later, two evenings later. I attended a native music festival. I was the only caucasian that attended. I was visible for miles around. A fancy mix of reggea and modern rythms. After a feasty night, I drove south to St. Anne and rented a cottage for the remains of my stay at Martinique. Suddenly I had to go to FdF and my flight back to europe. A nice vacation, after all.
