In front of Parque Central Granada, Nicaragua
I took a shuttle from Leon to the Managua airport to meet my friend from California, Eric Dahlberg. We met up and discovered that our ride that I confirmed so many times with the hotel in Granada (that I thought I was a bit annoying) wasn't there. So we ended up taking a less expensive taxi to our hotel. Granada is a colonial town that just doesn't compare to Copan or Antigua. It's missing the cobblestone streets and the charm of the other colonial towns I have visited. There is an impressive...

Week one of placements:
Wow, there are A LOT of babies being born in the country. In my two placements, I get to experience the best stages. Little, fat, jolly babies/ toddlers in the hospitals, and adorable 8-10 yr olds at the Soccer School. I love it!
So far my placementsare concerned, they are mostly consisting of a lot of observing. In the mornings I am in either at Santiago Hospital, here in Jinotepe, or at San ...

We went out for dinner and some mojitos that night in the middle of a torrential downpour. Who says it doesn´t rain in Central America?

Brian shaved his head this morning, and bought himself some new underpants......a very productive morning indeed (!!) We headed to Lago Apoyo with the boys for some much needed swim time. The heat in the town is something else. Just walking down the street will have you ...
... idiots driving their cars down the street at 3.15 despite the announced kick-off of 2pm.
In between gazing anxiously up the road to catch that first glimpse of the onrushing bulls and retiring to the shade to avoid the intense heat, a number of false alarms set the heart a-flutter. Then, all of a sudden there grew an unmistakeably genuine commotion from up ahead and people began streaming past us, screaming. We stood as long as we dared, snapping photos of the Nicas ...

our own healthy refreshments that were rich in the nutrients we had
discussed during the workshop.
We also wrote a letter to the
municipal office of the Ministry of Health in Tola to request visits
from Ob/Gyns to give consults to the pregnant women in the community at
least once every two months. Without this service, most women go
without sonograms and other “standard” prenatal care ...
... a while a finca with animals I suspect all to be thirsty, tiny and dusty. We don't stay in Managua, our guide judged it not intersting enough and above all to dangerous for our group. The Dutch UNICEF people we spoke on the plane seemed to agree with that: not much to see in Managua, but still a lot to do especially what has to do with hygiencic measures. The second poorest country in the Western hemisphere just got out of a painful war between contras and sandinistas and the support ...
Granada, Nicaragua nathisnothome... We ended up having to pay a bit more than we planned for our hotle room. Luckily we met an english guy, Chris, who also couldn't find a room and we split the cost between the three of us. Chris has been living and working in Central America and he introduced us to some local Nicaraguans who we spent the evening with. The festival is pretty cool with live dancing and cheap local food stalls as well as lots of souvenir stalls.
Isla Ometepe, Nicaragua doscompletos... Como es posible?!" I think we entered a Bermuda Triangle-like space, that, or we got lost and went in a circle. I was truly sad to leave Ometepe, especially as on my way to catch the ferry I met the nicest old man, who talked to me for an hour about life on the island while I waited for the bus. He wasn't even waiting for the bus. That's just what people are like there! He said he was sure I would come back one day and that I should come say hi when I did.
