It was my first train ride in the Balkans and one of rather few I’ve taken this year in my European travels. For all the talk about how great the trains are in Europe, the current reality is that in most parts of the continent for most destinations buses are faster and more convenient means of travel and in many places the only way to get from place to ...

Walked home for lunch - as you are allowed to have a pass out, but another observation was that people were allowed to carry in coolers (eskies) and bags of food... no problem... in fact they had set aside a lovely grassy area for them to eat - or use the main picnic tables near the drinks area.

... are many spectacular waterfalls, of different sizes, and again, like in Lake Bled, the water is perfectly still. I have never seen water so blue and so clear. You can see to the bottom everywhere and there are hundreds of fish in every single lake. You cannot swim at Plitvice Lakes but we felt that this was a good thing as it was then protected. Unfortunately, the weather was very poor and overcast and we looked like typical Brits abroad in small shorts ...
