... greets me as I pass, no one seems very interested in chatting or learning more about this odd stranger passing through. Very much a mind your own business culture. Hopefully I'll have some real conversations on my next visit. Right now I'm going to end this segment in a classy way: Maienfeld is the area that inspired the children's classic, Heidi. A book I read as a child which fueled my fascination with ...

      Day 278

Things get a little confusing after Landquart. I follow what I think is a path to the next town, across the wide grassy valley, but no, it dead ends in a field. I backtrack and look for another way. I could just follow the road, but I've managed to avoid roads in all of Switzerand, so why start using them now? Instead I follow ...

1Day 278 2 hrs, 3 kms I'd always thought of Switzerland as being a very secular, non religious country. Well, today's Sunday, so let's see if that's true or not. To my surprise, I see several churches that look quite full--and not just old people, folks in their 20s and 30s too. Landquart is ...

... concert in my next village.
One interesting thing I notice about Zizers, is the cemetery. I like to check out the cemeteries to see what they tell me about each country and culture--and I've seen some pretty fascinating ones with amazing monuments and masoleums. Here in Switzerland it's not about the fancy stonework, it's about the flowers. Each grave is a bed bursting with flowers--each one a different arrangement.
      Hmmm... interesting.

Day 277 5 hrs, 9.5 kms Day Totals: 16 hrs, 33.5 kms No rugged gorges to hike through today, it seems. Just one town after another in this relatively wide, productive valley. And up ahead it looks to be even more modernized. A full size city with... what?!... skyscrapers? In Switzerland?! Nooooo.... Switzerland's not supposed to have skyscrapers! oh well... Actually I am looking forward to reaching my first real Swiss city of this hike. Maybe ...
