... I like it that many cultures focus more on relationships than on hard work. In other places quality isn't that important... enjoying life is more important than following rules. The Swiss culture is very much tied to the environment that it was born in. Hardship has made people stronger and more determined to succeed. And I'm sure there is a dark side to this culture as well, which I would probably ...

      Day 278

Things get a little confusing after Landquart. I follow what I think is a path to the next town, across the wide grassy valley, but no, it dead ends in a field. I backtrack and look for another way. I could just follow the road, but I've managed to avoid roads in all of Switzerand, so why start using them now? Instead I follow ...

1Day 278 2 hrs, 3 kms I'd always thought of Switzerland as being a very secular, non religious country. Well, today's Sunday, so let's see if that's true or not. To my surprise, I see several churches that look quite full--and not just old people, folks in their 20s and 30s too. Landquart is ...

I knew I was going to have to deal with this eventually: hiking in the rain. After all, this is the Alps, not the Saharan Desert. Although I've dealt with rain on short term hikes, when I had a warm room to dry off in at the end of the day, I've never had to hike for mutiple days and deal with rain.
Persistent rain can make a long term hiking/camping trip really unravel. Your shoes gets wet. Your clothes get wet. ...

... adapt to the standards of cleanliness, order and hard work that has made and kept this country beautiful. I hope so... Just as I'm checking out, it starts pouring down rain. I wait for the rain to stop, but finally give up, switch to sandals, and continue up the road, looking for the hostel, hoping it's still here and has a vacancy. Sure, I could camp out again tonight, but I'd really rather not.... Yep, just my luck. There is a hostel. ...
